It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Dr Angelo Niko Grubisic.
Angelo aged 38, a professional wingsuit athlete from the UK and a Lecturer in Astronautics and Advanced Propulsion within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, sustained fatal injuries on the 21st of August, during a wingsuit jump in the Al Soudah region of Saudi Arabia. He had been leading a group of three experienced wingsuiters taking part in an eight day trip scouting out new jump locations.
Dr Angelo was a truly talented individual who always had a smile on his face and was always excited for the next adventure. He balanced a constant dedication to both his academics and his wingsuit flying, giving 100% to everything he put his focus on.
Over the last eight years Dr Angelo had worked extensively with the Eurpoean Space Agency and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the development of advanced technologies. He was a specialist in spacecraft propulsion and materials science, lecturing in Astronautics in Human & Robotics Spaceflight utilising applied systems engineering knowledge and methodologies. Dr Angelo joined the Astronautics Group at the University of Southampton in 2013.

Leader of the Icarus World Record Wingsuit Project. The aim of the Icarus Project is to develop the world’s first scientifically engineered wingsuit to break current records and set additional world records for human flight. These records include the highest altitude and highest speed wingsuit jump, whilst traveling furthest total distance in the longest ever wingsuit flight.

Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in California where he worked on gridded ion thrusters and development of ion energy analysis experiments in order to establish the influence of cathode design on high energy ion production in gridded ion thrusters and hollow cathode microthrusters.

Electric propulsion consultant engineer with Qinetiq – Working on Solar Electric Propulsion system (SEPS) on European Space Agency’s BepiColombo mission to Mercury. Mission launched in October 2018.
The BepiColombo mission will perform a comprehensive study of Mercury, including characterization of its magnetic field, magnetosphere, and both interior and surface structure. It was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket on 20 October 2018, with an arrival at Mercury planned for December 2025, after a flyby of Earth, two flybys of Venus, and six flybys of Mercury. Therefore a part of Angelo will always be out there orbiting Mercury and pushing the boundaries of science and technology.
